Visual Thinking Strategies

The docent facilitates a group discussion that promotes looking, rather than being the source of information or opinions. The group discovers and interprets a works of art based on their knowledge and interest and the students progress through various levels of aesthetic development. The following set questions are asked and each the response are repeated:

What’s going on in this picture? 

What do you see that makes you say that?

What more can you find?

The discussion allows looking, interpretation with evidence, and personal reflection. The docent add historical or factual information to validate what they concluded by observation and group knowledge. Remember, that once the facts are spoken by the docent, creative thinking and interpretation usually ends.
